What is the purpose of the Contactless Ticket application?

« Ticket sans contact” (Contactless Ticket) is an extension to your transport application. It allows this application to create a secure digital transport card on your mobile phone to store all the tickets purchased on the transport application.

Once the transport application and the « Ticket sans contact » extension are both installed, you can buy your tickets (tickets and season tickets) wherever and whenever you want on your transport application. Then you validate your ticket by simply passing your smartphone over a contactless validator, just like using a card.

 

Why does contactless ticket has no interface?

 » Ticket sans contact  » allows your transport mobile application to create and access a secure place on your mobile phone to store transport cards and tickets purchased from your transport application. Its operating mode is similar to a plugin/add-on to be installed from a web browser to benefit from new functionalities.

 » Ticket sans contact  » is therefore not a transport application and is not intended to sell tickets. This extension cannot be used on its own and as such has no interface except for few phone models. For the latter we propose a link to the transport applications of our partners.

 

How does it work?

Our solution is based on contactless technology, more commonly known as NFC, an acronym for Near Field Communication. This technology, widely deployed in transport networks providing contactless cards, is now available in most smartphones.

NFC technology on mobile phones offers travelers the same ease-of-use as a contactless card. Once the ticket has been purchased from the transport’s mobile application, passengers simply wave their smartphone on the validator and it is immediately recognized. Buying a ticket anywhere and anytime allows you to gain in flexibility and to have only one device in your pocket for all your tickets and cards, your smartphone.

 

What services are available today?

Today the contactless services operated by Wizway are available in the Ile-de-France region on the Ile-de-France Mobilités network, in Strasbourg on the Compagnie des Transports Strasbourgeois network, in Lille on the Ilevia network and from the SNCF Assistant on the TER and CTS networks.

What are the eligibility conditions?

The Wizway solution is already compatible with all Android NFC smartphones thanks to the the integration of all mobile NFC technologies: Secure Element (a physical chip within the mobile) and Host Card Emulation (a software place in the smartphone secured by Android).

The digitalization of transport cards using HCE technology enables compatibility with 100% of Android smartphones. However, the acceptance of HCE requires an update of the validation equipment and not all transport networks are yet compatible. As long as this adaptation is not implemented, the NFC smartphones eligible are those compatible with our SE technology.

How to install the service?

  1. If the « Ticket sans contact » extension is not already installed on your mobile, your transport application will offer you to download it. If you accept, you will be redirected to your application shop (ex: PlayStore Google).
  2. Install the  » Ticket sans contact  » application.
  3. At the end of the installation, you will be automatically redirected to your transport application. Otherwise, click on the « back » button on your smartphone.
  4. Once back in your transport application, a digital transport card is created on your smartphone and will allow you to save your tickets in complete security on your mobile.

Your service is now installed, buy your tickets from your transport application. Once the payment is made, they are instantly stored in your digital transport card. It’s easy to travel! Just bring your smartphone close to a validator, tag or control device, and your ticket is automatically recognized. Just remember to activate the NFC function on your mobile.

 

How to activate the NFC?

To activate NFC, go to your phone’s settings. It is often accessible in the same menu as for WIFI and Bluetooth management.

The NFC function must be activated in order to validate a ticket or a card and be controlled. Please note that if the battery is flat, you will not be able to activate NFC.

The NFC consumes very little battery power, it is advisable to leave it activated to avoid any inconvenience during validation or a check.

 

Why are some Samsung smartphones eligible?

Some Samsung branded mobiles integrate their own NFC (Secure Element) chip. Within the framework of our partnership with Samsung, Wizway Solutions enables the card and tickets to be digitalized in complete security in this physical component of compatible Samsung smartphones.

The list of compatible Samsung mobiles as of October 20, 2020 : A5 2017, A8, A70, A71, A80, S7, S7 Edge, S8, S8+, S9, S9+, S10, S10+, s10e, S20, Note 8, Note 9, Note 10, Note 10+, Note 10 lite, Note 20, Z-Flip and Fold.

 

The installation of the service did not work, what can I do?

It may take up to 2 minutes to create your travel card. During this installation, it is necessary that your smartphone accesses the data network (3G/4G).

Some phones and settings have policies to reduce battery consumption that may interrupt the installation if the screen is put to sleep or the application is running in the background. If your installation has failed, we recommend that you try an installation again, making sure you have good network coverage and keep your screen active without exiting the application.

 

Why is validation taking longer on locked phones?

In order to save battery power, your phone may change the behavior of some components or features. It is likely that when the phone is locked, the NFC antenna will search less frequently for contactless equipment.

By analogy, your phone checks less frequently if you have new emails when it is locked.

Under no circumstances does Wizway’s solution impact transaction times when validating or checking your ticket.

 

Why does the validation take longer when the phone is switched off?

When the phone is switched off or has no battery, the chip (Secure Element) that stores your transport card is powered exclusively by the validator to read the tickets. The reading time is therefore significantly longer.

Please note that some smartphone models do not work properly when switched off or without battery. In order to save energy, some smartphones disable all functions including NFC before switching off.

 

Which application is used for the Paris metro?

Many applications now offer to buy tickets for travel in the Paris region: RATP, the SNCF Assistant, ViaNavigo or Transdev.

They allow you to buy a wide range of tickets, from ticket books to monthly passes, including airport and emission reduction passes. Fares requiring registration (annual pass, free…) are not yet available.

 

How do I buy a ticket?

 » Ticket sans contact  » is not a transport application and does not allow the sale of tickets. To buy a ticket, please download the application provided by your transport operator.

The payment of the tickets is managed by the transport application and is possible according to the means of payment available.

Why is my NFC phone not compatible?

Despite our efforts, some mobiles do not comply with the standards for the use of NFC services. Therefore, these phones are not approved to install the service.

In addition, some mobiles cause problems during validation. Transport operators can then choose to prohibit the installation of NFC services on these mobiles.

If your phone is not compatible, you will be notified by displaying a message in your transport application.

 

What happens if I change my mobile phone, or if it is lost or stolen?

When you change your mobile phone, you will need to reinstall the transport application and contactless ticket to be able to use your services again.

As each transport operator has its own management system for tickets, please contact your transport operator to find out about its after-sales service policy. In most cases, anonymous tickets will be lost and non-anonymous tickets (such as season tickets) can be reconstructed.

 

Is my iPhone eligible for NFC services?

Apple is the most invested manufacturer in NFC technology in the world. It deploys its payment solution based on this technology, Apple Pay, on a very large scale under agreements with the main banks. Since 2017, it has undertaken a similar approach in transport by gradually adapting its iPhones to the main transport networks: Tokyo, Beijing, Shanghai… and recently Washington DC, Los Angeles, and Chicago. This has been made possible thanks to the implementation of agreements with manufacturers connected to its security system.

There is no doubt that Paris, the 3rd largest transport network in the world, will soon be on the list.

To enable smartphones with NFC technology to work, 3 elements are important:

  • An NFC microchip with an antenna that allows the phone to communicate in contactless mode (via radio frequency) with the validation and control equipment in accordance with the ISO-14443 standard. The integration of this antenna within the smartphone plays an important role in the quality and speed of transactions.
  • A secure place on your smartphone to store your cards and tickets.
  • An interface called NFC API (Application Programming Interface) which allows the mobile application to access the secure place containing the transport tickets and to dialogue with the NFC chip of the mobile.

On Apple, the secure place and the NFC APIs are not open access and require prior agreement with Apple.

On Android, there are 2 ways to create a secure place to store your cards and tickets:

  • In a physical component (hardware) such as a chip soldered into the phone by the manufacturer (also called SE for Secure Element).
  • In a secure software place within the phone’s memory. This method proposed by Google is called HCE (Host Card Emulation).

The first solution, which consists of using a physical component (smart card) to store the card and tickets, has 3 important advantages:

  • Replicating a similar operating mode to contactless cards enables mobile solutions to be compatible with most contactless validators already deployed on transport networks.
  • Validators are able to read the card or ticket even when the phone is switched off or unloaded as with plastic cards. Quite practical in mobility situations.
  • The security of the physical components is considered inherently more robust than software solutions.

This mode of operation, identical to the contactless card, is « natively » compatible with transport networks and faster and cheaper to deploy. However, it requires:

  • The availability of a physical component compatible on the mobile with NFC services,
  • A commercial and technical agreement with the supplier for the use of the component.

The second solution, which consists of using a software place (HCE) to store the card and tickets, has the advantage of being compatible with all Android smartphones equipped with NFC technology. However, modifications are required to the equipment and the ticketing system, so mobile solutions take longer to implement. Validation and control only work when the smartphone is switched on.

Wizway offers a platform that is compatible with all NFC technologies: transport operators, depending on the compatibility with their infrastructure, deploy all the technologies from the launch, or deploy them gradually.

Contactless services on mobile phones allow a validation shorter than 500ms with a quality of experience equivalent to a plastic card. Several reasons can prevent the service from working properly:

  • The position of the antenna within the mobile is not always optimum or does not offer a wide range. The larger the mobile is, the more this problem tends to increase. Don’t panic, just take a hand and you will know how to place your mobile to optimize validation.
  • For services with the mobile switched off or unloaded, validation times can be extended as the control equipment will fully power the component to access the tickets.
  • As NFC uses magnetic induction, some shells prevent the service from working properly. Metal shells, for example, should be banned because they prevent the waves from passing through. In addition, the distance between the mobile and the validation equipment must be less than 5 cm. The position of the antenna, its power, the phone’s shell are all elements that can alter the proper functioning of the service.
  • Validation and control equipment must also be adapted to optimize transaction time. It is therefore possible that some equipment may not always be optimal.

Under no circumstances does Wizway’s solution impact transaction times during the validation or control of the title.
